Save our pharmacies

Pharmacy SignThis Government's real terms cash cuts to pharmacies across the UK could be about to take their toll. Local pharmacies used by hundreds of local people are facing closure, cutting off lifeline services for many elderly and vulnerable residents.

Over a third of Tendring's residents depend on an isolated pharmacy which will not receive funding from the Government's Pharmacy Access Scheme, according to a report by the House of Commons Library.

Despite being located in rural villages and towns, the pharmacies in St Osyth, Great Bentley, Brightlingsea, and Manningtree will not be eligible for special funding for pharmacies in isolated areas, but those in Thorpe-le-Soken and Kirby Cross will. This does not seem to make much sense.

Local Councillor Gary Scott says, "For many people the trip to get vital medicines from the pharmacy is long enough already."

"Cutting money to local pharmacies is nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul. It will only increase the strain on hospitals and GP's practices at a time when the NHS is already in enough trouble."

The £170million reduction in NHS funding for community pharmacies will put pharmacies across Tendring out of business.

We the undersigned oppose Conservative cuts to local pharmacies. They are vital to keep older people independent. Older people need to be at the heart of our community, rather than in hospital.
