David is the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Clacton.

David is an Essex man, born in Leigh-on-sea and raised in Shoeburyness. He gained his degree in History, Economics and Politics at Cambridge, followed by Law and Computer Science qualifications. As a student, he served as President of the Cambridge Union.

Now retired from full-time work, David is clerk to the trustees of the James Madison Trust, which supports academic research projects. Before that, he worked as an investigator for the "Ombudsman", looking into claims of maladministration by local councils, as a consultant helping UK public and private sector clients gain funding and find their way through bureaucracy in the E.U..

David was also Head of the European Office of BirdLife International and Head of European Affairs at East Sussex County Council.

David's voluntary work has included support for European youth movements, action on climate change and work for peace. He's now Head of Office of the Social Liberal Forum, which debates and makes representations on issues of concern to Liberals.

He contested Gainsborough and Horncastle for the Liberal Democrats in the 1987 parliamentary election and has served on various party committees and working groups including the regional party executive and on Sustainable Prosperity and Jobs, Defence, Peace and Security and Foreign Affairs.

David is currently Secretary of Cambridge Liberal Democrats.
